The Greatest Thing You’ll Ever Learn

8 May

The greatest thing you’ll ever learn is just to love and be loved in return.

How hard can that be?

How much effort does one person need to put into learning how to be loved.

When someone was in love with me my breath was taken away every time he said it. Was that me not knowing how to be loved or just enjoying the feeling? Getting acclimated?

The media makes a big deal out of learning how to be loved. Do I not think it’s a big deal because it isn’t really a big deal, or because I just haven’t had to learn it yet?

Polling the audience here. Did you have to learn? Was it as difficult as Grey’s Anatomy would have you think?

I think learning to be loved (and learning to love, for that matter) is like a language; it depends on how and how much you are exposed to it as you grow. For someone who was loved and taught from birth, you might learn to apply it a different way in romantic to platonic and familial love (like learning jargon for a new career or hobby, maybe?), and it might feel overwhelming and confusing for a little bit, but you’ll get there. If you’re not raised with it and aren’t really loved until you’re an adult, it’s like learning any foreign language as an adult–not impossible, but few people would find it at all easy.

And of course there are subtleties and variants that that metaphor doesn’t cover, and ones that it could be expanded to. (Accents as styles of expressing affection, maybe?) But overall, I think it depends.
