My Nail Beds Are Perfect

23 Aug

The other day I was hanging out with a friend when she started looking in the mirror and complaining about her skin or chest or something and I realized something “I don’t care”.

Unpopular opinion here but I don’t care about whatever flaw you see in yourself that no one else notices. And I’m not going to stand around and recreate this scene from Mean Girls with you.

When people I work or hang out with start to complain about their bodies and expect me to chime in with how my nail beds suck I just look them in the eye and say “I’m a perfect angel with the body of a porn star” without a single trace of irony.

Because the fact that my hair is allergic to headbands of any variety and chooses to eat them instead is not interesting and it’s not anyone else’s problem. And I don’t have any desire for anyone to try to make me feel better about it by either showering me with compliments or putting themselves down and starting the cycle over again.

Complimenting other women via self-deprecation is a trick we’re taught early and which feeds into what we’re taught about women being in constant competition with each other. But all I have to say to that is that it isn’t helpful to me anymore, so I’m just letting it go.

Having a low opinion of yourself is not modesty. It’s self-destruction.
