Knowledge Is The Goal

14 Nov

The other night I got drinks with a good friend who told me a story.

My friend had been out with a male friend of hers and pointed out – as one does – a bit of patriarchal bullshit.  Now, I’ve met this guy and he was a decent, forward-thinking dude, but when she pointed it out to him he didn’t see it was an example of male privilege.  Bummer.

A few days later he sent her a text message saying that he saw an example of it on tv and now he understood that aspect of his privilege as a white man.

People often accuse feminists of being man-haters.  They say we really want to take power away from men or emasculate them or something.  But the proof that this isn’t true is in that statement.  Him being filled with self-loathing or his sperm count somehow magically decreasing would not be a Feminism-Win.  The perfect moment of Feminism-Win was when he said “Wow, that is some privilege I enjoy in my life because I am a white male.” and then continuing about his life as a smarter individual.  So congratulations.  Well done.

“Men who want to be feminists do not need to be given a space in feminism. They need to take the space they have in society & make it feminist.”
