A Republican state legislator in Georgia doesn’t like the term rape “victim.” In fact, he has introduced a bill mandating that state criminal codes refer to these people as, simply, “accusers” — until there’s a conviction in the matter. “Changing, just for these particular crimes, the word ‘victim’ to ‘accuser’ really buys into an outdated and disproved myth about victims who come forward with these kinds of allegations,” said White. “I think it’s a sad reality that for some reason, it’s easier for society, in some respects, to believe that a victim would fabricate this type of crime than to believe that a person is capable of committing certain atrocities. And it really has a chilling effect for victims who already have an extremely difficult time coming forward.”
Georgia lawmaker proposes classifying miscarriages as ‘prenatal murder.’ Georgia State Rep. Bobby Franklin, a Republican from Marietta, Georgia, has introduced a bill that would criminalize miscarriages, making abortion and miscarriage — or “prenatal murder” in the language of the bill — potentially punishable by death.
A law under consideration in South Dakota would expand the definition of “justifiable homicide” to include killings that are intended to prevent harm to a fetus—a move that could make it legal to kill doctors who perform abortions. The Republican-backed legislation, House Bill 1171, has passed out of committee on a nine-to-three party-line vote, and is expected to face a floor vote in the state’s GOP-dominated House of Representatives soon.
